You graduated from Cottonwood High School in 2006. As far as higher education you’re currently at USU but you also attended Snow College, and SLCC. Basically your facebook info page tells me the usual stuff but yours is far more detailed than I’ve ever seen. It’s kind of like a little mini resume.

Since we’re official facebook friends I get to look at your wall and see that you have about 1000 photos and over 600 friends. Your wall doesn’t share a lot of information about you. It shows me your sense of humor but not a lot of details of your friendships with anyone. I especially enjoyed your latest status (which I commented on)

I just typed in “Elise Frederickson Utah” in Google and I found your twitter account, facebook, two blogs, and your linked in page. I tried so hard to dig up some dirt on you from high school but searching your name with your high school didn’t produce any new results. It doesn’t look like you played sports in high school so I couldn’t find any news articles.

Overall Elise I found that you are all over the place and completely into the social media phenomenon. Nothing seems to be damaging though. All your blogs and your facebook are a good representation of yourself. There aren’t any bad photos (although I’ll be honest I didn’t look at all 979) Your facebook shows who you are but in a professional way as well as your blogs. 6 Steps to a Successful Resume

Start with a Word document version of your resume since that’s what most people are familiar with, but don’t stop there.
Hyperlink all of the information in your resume that makes sense. Your name can link to your blog, and your contact information can include links to your LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr etc. profiles. Make sure that the information on the selected profiles is something you wouldn’t mind sharing with a potential employer.
Create an HTML version of your resume and embed it into the body of your email to HR.
Write an introduction explaining what you’ve done as if you’re explaining it to your Mom. Let them know why you think this is important. Explain your interest in sharing information about yourself as it exists online and invite them to explore these links to research who you are. Phrase it in such a way that suggests you’re trying to make their job easier.
Attach the Word document version of your resume to your message and let them know in the introduction that a Word version of your resume is also attached. A lot of times people just want to save resumes in a predictable way or print them out. (Yes, people still print things out and make notes on them with a pen).
Don’t expect them to click on anything. If you’re called in for an interview, don’t start asking whether they read your latest blog post or saw the pictures from your week in Yosemite posted to Facebook. Remember, you sent them an invitation, but that doesn’t mean you should make them feel obligated to check you out on your terms. Just keep inviting people to check out your work and your life online.

I saw this in Time magazine and thought, "Gee, that's a heck of an ad for a newspaper." Then I remembered in my major that's my goal not just to inform but to enable people to make the right decisions based on the information they receive.

The importance of etiquette via email and on the web is important when communicating with superiors and/or people you don't personally know. The more effective we are in communication the more successful in our careers we become.

In The Core Rules of Netiquette rule #2 states: Adhere to the same standards of behavior that you follow in real life. We must most importantly "be ethical" in all our business and personal dealings. Developing a positive and respectful reputation for yourself is one thing but it's up to you to maintain such a reputation.

Another aspect of that article I found to be noteworthy was rule #4: Respect other people's time and bandwidth. We need to remember we're not the center of cyberspace. People have a lot of things going on in life so keep things short and succinct but still descriptive and detailed enough to get the correct message across.

United Breaks Guitars

United Airlines faced a public relations nightmare over damaging a passenger’s guitar. Dave Carroll, Canadian singer, became an overnight YouTube success with his video, “United Breaks Guitars.” The video is result of Carroll’s nine-month long battle with United Airlines after damaging his guitar. All Carroll seemed to want was compensation for his damaged property. According to USA Today the estimated cost of damage was $1,200. After not agreeing to pay for the damage Carroll told United he would make three videos about his experience and put them on the Internet for the entire world to see. The video was an instant sensation.

Was Dave Carroll out of line? Whose side are people on? United Airlines received a lot of negative press in result of the video and the way they handled Carroll’s dispute. What could have the airline done to stop this from happening? How could they handle the situation more professionally?

In this new era of social media how does a large company like United Airlines adapt their public relations team with the changing times? Ordinary citizens are more capable today than ever to express their thoughts for the world to see. YouTube, Blogger, Twitter, these are examples of sights where people can say whatever they want for anyone to see. A wise company would hire someone in the public relations department to be in charge of social media to monitor positive and negative things being discussed by their company.

United Airlines made its first mistake by being careless with a passenger’s baggage. Their second mistake made was not giving Dave Carroll $1200 to repair his guitar. Paying someone $1200 wouldn’t make a dent in the amount of money the company is worth. Had United foreseen the effects a YouTube video can have I’m sure they would have rethought their decision to refuse to pay Carroll for his damages.

Carroll on the other hand was very wise. He understood the power of social media and even told United what he was going to do, assuming they recognized social media’s power as well. Well, they didn’t and Carroll, in essence, won the battle. He outsmarted a major airline company. He brought humor into his music to help catch people’s attention. He easily could have just filmed himself talking, screaming, kicking, wailing, whatever but no one really cares about that.

He put a lot of effort into his video and original song. There really isn’t a trace of anger in his video. Carroll did an outstanding job at making light of the situation. On the other hand though was it really necessary for him to release a second video and countdown to a third video that is to be released soon? The second video was not near as popular as the first. I think it’s because after a certain point people stop caring about past issues and move on to more current events.

Carroll made his point. He had a bigger impact than he probably assumed and he hurt United. His goal was accomplished. But he couldn’t stop there and that is one of the biggest problems with social media. People don’t know that too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing. It seems to me now that all his actions are just to further his singing career to become a celebrity. The sincerity behind Carroll is gone and his hidden agenda has been exposed because of his inability to move on.

Oh by gosh by golly! I'm officially now a blogger. I'll be honest from the beginning in saying that I have no blog experience but I'm looking forward to the challenge. In the process of creating this blog I got to step two "Name Your Blog" and was stuck so my dear friend Rachelle suggested I use my name...GENIUS!

Today is the first day of spring semester. It feels like the arctic on campus but thanks to my Christmas present (Arcteryx coat) I'm able to stay nice and warm.
